    Her name is Regina Ferris

Her heart is pure, she is so gentle and sometimes a bit harsh when needed but she always executes everything with grace.

    My mom is so sweet.
    My mom is so kind.

She took us in, both me and my brother,
from people who no longer wanted us.

She loved us, clothed us, put a roof over our heads, put us through school and to this day she still cares for us.

She is strong, concurred breast cancer, being without a job.

She is Regina Ferris, my supporter, my oracle, my mom.

When I had my own daughter 3 years ago, I began to understand all the sacrifices my mom made for me when I was a child. She did so much for me and always wanted the best for me, and as a child you don’t always appreciate it. I will never take my mom for granted again and am thankful for each day that she is on this planet.

My mom are the greatest. She help me with everything. If I am sick she will nurse Me until I fell better. I want to win this competition to show my mom how much I love her.

My mom is the strongest women I know. She brought me and my two brothers up in very difficult circumstances. My Father had some issues. But she protected us and raised us as well adjusted adults with Christian values. She supported my Father in getting well. And we did have some awesome years with him as adults. She is 76 this year and still walks app 5km each day for exercise and attends an exercise class for mature ladies at church. I admire her so. She is my role model and I love her with everything in me!

I left home with my baby to marry her father, when things did not work out my mother welcomed me back in her house with open arms. She has been my support and has carried me through all the trials I’ve faced being a single mother. Giving advicing, babysitting she has been my angel sent from heaven

  3. Alexandra April 8th, 2016 at 2:54 pm #

My Mom is the best. A single mother who has raised two daughters – doing all she can to be the best mother, friend and support. My life would not be what it is today if it wasn’t for her.

My Mother has done everything for me. She taught us girls good life skills when we were growing up. When finished school we were well prepared for life.

The only goal in my life that really matters, is making my mother happy. From the day I was born, she has always lived her life trying to make life the best possible for me. Be it getting me books, encouraging me to sketch, hoarding files of Quest magazines so that I could use it during my schooling days, teaching me the beautiful history of our country, exposing me to nature, and how one can learn life lessons by just simply observing fauna and flora. She taught me to appreciate what I have, blossom my hidden talents, help others and to never think of myself as above anyone else. She is a beacon of light for me and I will always be grateful for the lessons she has taught. Thank you mum for never leaving my side.

When I was only 12 years old my mom got cancer that terminal. She was only 35 kg at thw time and Dr told her that if he operates it will be 50/50.

She took the chance and fought the sting of death to be there and see her 4 children grow up and be successfull.

She is one of the strongest people I know and she deserves to be pampered.

I am now 36 years old an my mom is still my superhero, my angel.

She is the smell of laughter and of sunshine.
Her kisses healed my wounds when I was small
She made sure I grew up strong and tall
When I saw the cuts on her wrists when I was young, I didn’t understand but I knew something was wrong. I couldn’t be around to help her out then, but when I experienced the same thing she would be there for me again and again.
Whenever times seemed less than strong,
She never told me I was wrong.

My mother who works in a job she hates
Has sacrificed spending on herself to spoil her kinds instead.
She is someone who loves to create
But has no time before she’s in bed.

I cannot give her the world she has given me.
She, who has sacrificed blankets, food and money.
For there isn’t much I can afford to pay
So help me spoil her this Mothers day.

My mom Vera is an absolute gem,
    I’d score her a definite 10 out of 10.
It is only now that I am much older,
I realize that I should have told her.
That I appreciate the great sacrifice,
And all the genuine heartfelt advice.
So many childhood memories I can share,
Like mom spending hours braiding my hair.
Or together rehearsing content for school tests,
Doing everything to accommodate school lunch requests.
Making home-made pizza for our movie night,
And encouraging me to be brave and forthright.
Even now as I get older and wiser,
I still depend on you as my trusted advisor.
Mom, you are the best there is in SA,
You deserve to be spoilt on this Mother’s Day!

  9. Robyn Groombridge April 8th, 2016 at 9:19 pm #

My Mom has been there for me through everything. From when I was young, she took on the responsibility of both mom and dad when my father was lacking, and became my strength when he left us.

She is my inspiration and role model because she always knows what to do, gives amazing advice, and is the most amazing mother. I wish to be half as good of a mother as she is.

She is a wonderful listener, she is kind and the most selfless person I have ever met. She always puts everyone before herself and helps as many people as she can.

She truly deserves to be pampered and spoilt this mother day because she is the most spectacular mother in the world, and I don’t think I would have survived such emotional and psychological trauma without her help. She is the most amazing woman, mother and best friend a daughter could ever ask for!

  10. Marion van Tonder April 8th, 2016 at 10:14 pm #

The greatest hero in my life is her, she never gives up on me. She sticks it out and make it work. She sacrifices things in her life, in order to help me grow. She gives up what she want because I needs it more. She works hard and overcomes adversity. When she fails for a moment, she gets back up on her feet to show others she doesn’t have to stay down. She shows her loved ones that love is not “proved” by conformity. She teaches me that having a voice is a sign of courage, and she will not stay silent to make people feel comfortable. She is fearless and will do whatever it takes to bring about the greatness in the ones she loves because doing so brings her peace. Her name is — Alida van Tonder. Not only my mom but my best friend too.

  11. Khadijah April 9th, 2016 at 4:26 am #

She has been my pillar of support throughout my life especially during the loss of my son. A great grandmother to my other kids.

We are 3 tertiary dependants on my mom we are not funded by any bursary scheme/financial aid but she manages to meet all my needs regardless that she’s earning less she’s taking care of my stay-at-home sister and her child ,my father and lil bro ..I have more than enough and never went to bed hungry..She s the only breadwinner at home but still manages to keep me happy..She is a supermom she turned a house into a home 🙂 ♥

  13. Hannah McDonald April 9th, 2016 at 6:16 pm #

My mom has sacrificed so much for our whole family 🙂 Her name is Loreen McDonald, and she is basically Wonder Woman – a phenomenal wife to my dad and stepmom/mom to me, my brother and my sister, sacrificing time and time again so that we are supported and can prosper. Plus, she’s an amazing principal to an entire primary school and boss to a large staff of teachers, a teacher to a class of 16 Grade 3 learners – investing in the lives of each of them – and is actively involved in her church, too. My precious mama runs on little sleep and leftovers most of the time, and rarely takes time for herself, so I think this hamper would be ABSOLUTELY perfect for her – just to show her how phenomenal she really is!

  14. Monique Barnard April 10th, 2016 at 9:38 am #

There are no words to describe my mom. She is fierce and always ready to fight for her children. She is strict when we need it, and sweet and kind the next.

We always know we can go to her when we need her help or hug. She is the best in all the small things she does for us. But above all she is the best for her unconditional love.

Annelize Barnard thanks for being the best mom.

  15. Sindisiwe McDonald April 10th, 2016 at 1:06 pm #

My mother opened the world to me through books – reading to me, and teaching me to read for myself. More than this, she taught me to ask questions about the things I read, to read more in search of the answers, to come to my own conclusions. She taught me the value of other people’s experiences and insights, taught me to listen to other people’s stories and to love them for who they are. Thank you, Mama!

  16. Shakeelah April 11th, 2016 at 6:18 am #

My mother is my hero. Not only has she been the worlds greatest mom, but she’s also the worlds greatest dad as she single-handedly raised my brothers and I. She is a school teacher in the Southern Suburbs and also established and manages the school library which functions on donations alone, but what a beautiful library it is.

She is the strongest, most selfless, determined and inspiring women I have ever known. After my parents divorce, she finally got her drivers licence in order to drop off and fetch us at school. We’ve seen her hit the books nearly every night as she worked towards her second degree. We were there when she graduated and we continue to be there for her everyday.

My mom is the best in the world because she taught us how to love unconditionally, that forgiveness is an attribute of the strong, that knowledge is power and that family is everything.

  17. Katalin Mercer April 11th, 2016 at 5:43 pm #

My Mom’s the best in SA for so many reasons,
She remains constant throughout all the seasons.
She’s loving & gentle yet courageous & strong,
She knows how to admit when she is wrong.
She’s clever & capable and never gets stressed,
And as a mother she is so richly blessed,
To have precious jewels around her neck-
The arms of her children- her reality checks.
As a mother she’s a doctor, a chef as well as a teacher
She’s also a sand castle expert & lifesaver on beaches.
    My Mom’s incredible – that’s what I think,
And if she wins this hamper she’d be tickled pink!

  18. Kyle Pascarl Moonsamy April 11th, 2016 at 6:39 pm #

My mum Louise Moonsamy is the bestest mum in the entire world. She’s never too tired to do anything I ask and never complains even when she has a fractured rib and is on sick leave she still gets up at 2am very morning to cook for my dad and myself. By 4am she’s already washed the clothes and hung them to dry,she then tidys up the house and then gets ready for school.I can call her at anytime to ask her for money to go to chill at my local hot spot and she never refuses. When I train tbody building) she ensures that my breakfast, snacks and lunch are all ready before she leaves for school everyday. My mum has been my personal chef nurse, doctor, personal stylist, interior designer, mechanic.car wash, paty planner, baker, braai master, but most of all my best friend who I can always turn to at any time no matter how busy she is,she will always make time for me. She’s alway accepted me for who I am and does not put any pressure on me to be like other people, she always says In Your Time, everything and anything is possible In Your Time. She will always love me no matter what I do and only wants the best for me. She treats my dad and I like Kings everyday and believes strongly that everyday could be our last one on earth so why live in regret and make the most of every moment, and don’t let your last words to loved ones be unkind ones cause you never know when you will see them again. She’s a one in a million and I know I will never find another mum like her in the entire world.Love you mum

My mother is the best mom because she was by my side while I gave birth to my little princess. I couldn’t have done it without her & after going through labour pains I cannot thank her enough for everything she has done for me. She deserves the very best in this world ❤️

  20. Tania Brewis April 12th, 2016 at 7:10 am #

My mom is the best person I’ve ever met. She’s always there when I need her, she will give her last to people in need! My mom lifts me up when I’m down, she is my anchor. I don’t know what I’d to without my mom, I love her so much.

  21. Mpho April 12th, 2016 at 10:31 am #

She has taught me to know when I can fight for myself and when to allow God to fight for me; when to talk and when not to.
Above all to be a better women and wife to be

  22. Samantha April 12th, 2016 at 10:54 am #

My mother is my best friend. She taught me to be brave, kind and caring, When she struggled, she taught me to be strong and optimistic. When my parents divorced and we lived alone with her she taught me endurance and perseverance. When she helped me pay for my studies she taught my pride and value. And throughout every moment of my life she showed me love. My mother made me the woman I am, and I hope to one day be the same inspiration to another young girl. The world needs more female role models, no doubt, but I am lucky enough to have had one my whole life.

  23. Annette Hamann April 12th, 2016 at 11:54 am #

She’s kind and Soft, warm and loving but when it’s necessary she can be firm. She has gotten me through some very dark years in my life when I suffered a really dark depression. When everyone walked out because they didn’t know how to deal with the depression she was there and she never gave up on me and making me see that life will be good again. I owe her my life for everything she has done for me. She was not only a mom to me but also to my son when I couldn’t be. You will never meet a warmer more loving and unselfish person than my mom. She never had a easy life but somehow it made her stronger and never bitter or resentful. What makes her most special though is the fact that she was my mom when my mom didn’t want to be a mom. She’s my mother in law and has been the mother I never had. She didn’t think twice of making me her daughter instead of daughter in law. I can’t think of a more special and deserving person than her. She makes me want to be a better person. When you spend time with her you just leave there feeling better about yourself. I thank God everyday for putting her in my life. I’m so grateful for her and not only because of her being a fantastic mother but also for being a wonderful grandmother to my son, that is also something I never had in my life. Despite everything that was thrown at me in life today I’m a very happy and confident person because of my mom in law. I love her more than my own life. She’s definitely deserving of this fabulous Prize. It would mean the world to me to give her something back in life for all that she has done for me.

My Mother taught myself and my sisters life skills which made us well prepared for life after school

  25. Selona Govender April 12th, 2016 at 6:14 pm #

My mum had a very tough life, she was badly burnt when I was just 5 years old. This didn’t stop her from loving and caring for my siblings and I.
She still worked hard to send us to school and give us a good life.
She always tried hard to make me smile and give me the best.
She taught me how to be a good and responsible lady, and for that I’ll always be grateful.
Thank you mum for being so committed and for loving us unconditionally.

My Mum is the most amazing role model in my life. She has always shown me what it means to be a loving, successful compassionate human, and encouraged me to create the person I want to be and be that person ….From the time I was born, up until now, there has always been one person totally invested in my happiness, Her valuable life lessons are priceless – My Mum taught me positive words can influence your household and teach your children and family members how to use kind words to impact the world….Spread Kindness wherever you go….:-) ….#My Mum #My Greatest Blessing..# words of wisdom

A single mother of 3 who raised her children on her own since 1993. She taught me how to be a strong, independent, well-mannered woman that i am today. No amount of gifts, love and attention would be enough to express my gratitude towards the superhero that i call “mum”. She is my everything. This gift would simply be a small token of appreciation for all the time and effort she has put into being the best she can be for her kids.

  32. Fazielah Williams April 14th, 2016 at 9:07 am #

My mom married a comic book geek and designed kick ass super hero outfits for us, her children, from birth.

When Dad died way too soon, Mom put her own Superhero S on her chest and single handedly raised us on a nurse’s salary – seeing us through school, university and our first jobs.

Despite suffering two heart attacks and a stroke, she is still out there, fighting to give us a better life than she had and bringing joy to everyone she meets.

We are super girls only because our mom is Wonder Woman!

  34. melanie April 14th, 2016 at 11:48 am #

My mom was a city girl. she got married and moved to the farm in Stanger.

She grew up her three daughters and one son (aged 2 years (Me) – 12years) all alone on a farm in Stanger after my dad left her for another woman, with nothing except a house on a farm, with no money, all alone and R200 a month to support us and she wasn’t even working.

my dad didn’t care one bit about us or my mom. As I am telling you all this, I am actually in tears because my mom has been through it all and I believe that my mom is the strongest, independent and most amazing woman I know, because if it was another woman in her place, they would of had a nervous breakdown, but she stayed strong.

my mom has never been on a plane or even on a holiday and we don’t have the money to send her on a nice holiday. Please help us pay back our mom for all that she has done for us.

she is 67 years old and from Durban.

    thank you
    Melanie

My amazing Mumsy was by far the coolest and most loving mum in the entire world- let alone South Africa! I could tell her anything and everything- she was my best friend. From little she was my best barbie playing friend, the fuel to my imagination and as a teen she was my best shopping bud, and gagging over gossip and boys and till 20s she was my best drinking and sushi dates partner. She was my partner in crime- so many of my wildest and most hilarious nights- were not only with her, but because of her! How many can say that ! She never ever judged me or said I was bad or disgusting for doing something I know was very naughty from small to old- she just giggled and said its part off my fire she loved smile emoticon I miss her every day. And mother’s day is a day – well i wish it would just go away. She loved books so much- it was her escape- and well Just thought I would enter for her. My sister and I miss her everyday- She was not only one of a kind- she was the one and only in so many ways- and she was a mom to so many of my friends- she was that cool…

What a difficult question to put into words! My mother is my best friend, advisor, teacher, healer, carer and my two toddlers greatest assist in life.

My husband, children and I went through a really rough time where we lost everything – literally. She took us all in (financially she shouldn’t have) but she clothed us, fed us, dropped us, off, took care of our babies, fed my children, supported and encouraged us; and now 3 months later we have are back on our feet in our OWN apartment she is just as loving and caring as ever. We would never have gotten over life’s hard blows without her.

She is the sun in our lives with more compassion and caring than any human I know. *crying now*

You deserve the best always mom, I love you and I know us two book nerds would love this special girl time.

  38. Cecilia du Plessis April 14th, 2016 at 1:52 pm #

My mom is so strong. She raised 3 children (one of whom is disabled) on her own after her husband walked out. After having no tertiary education and having 6 back operations she worked 16 hour days to put food on the table. Some months it didn’t go so great and we would eat porridge for supper. But she got all 3 of us through school, she always supported us and motivated us to do better than she was able to.

After many hard years my amazing mother has worked herself into a higher position. Through all of this my brother died and my mother had to go through the heartbreak of losing a child on her own. My grandmother got cancer and my mom cared for her daily until she passed away.

My mother is strong and has never complained, but she has had a hard life and deserves to be taken care of and spoiled. I love my mother immensely and will be proud to be like her one day <3

She helped pull me through a sickness no one knew what it was, had doctors all over pondering.
causing me to be extremely suicidal without me being aware of it. i was having seizures and hardly aware of what was happening around me as i was completely dazed out of the time.

she pulled me through death. now i am alive and we drink coffee together all the time. she is love. pure love. everywhere she goes people around her just want to be with her. and i have learnt to love like she does.

My mom is my world and my everything. She is the one person that is always there no matter what. Thinking of all she does for me ill be writing a book… I love her so much and I should be showing and telling her more how much she really means to me.

She is my super mom !!!

My mother is the backbone of our family, she gave up work to stay at home and raise my brother and I. It was only when I finished studying that she told me that many of the days we got crumpets or chips for lunch that it was due to financial strain. She had to take me to endless dr appointments with my asthma and she has been there every step supporting me through my struggle with anxiety and depression, motivating me even when I knew I was hurting them deeply during this time. She is and has been my lifeline for the last two years.

  42. monique April 15th, 2016 at 9:46 am #

My mom Sandra is the best mom ever and means the world to me. She always makes sure we have clean clothes to wear and food to eat. She always puts my needs in front of her own and wants me to always be happy. If someone messes with me, you better watch out. I can talk to her about anything and she always has a solution to problems.

My mom is my rock and my support system.

I’ve been unemployed for the longest time but she has supported me and my son with the little money that she has.
She has been in and out of hospital in the past two weeks and that made me realised that life wouldn’t be the same without her and I need her more than ever.
She is a strong, zealous and praying woman. And I thank God for her and for her life and health

  44. Ashleigh Holmes April 15th, 2016 at 10:13 am #

There’s nothing like being sick to make you fully appreciate the awesomeness of your mom.

Homemade chicken soup, a TV bed, a cup of sweet tea, picking up my favourite choccie and magazine from the store, giving me my medicine, making doctor appointments, playing with my hair and just reassuring me that it’s okay to be sick, that it’s okay to rest and that I will get better.

Even as a married woman, I still like to go home to mom when I am sick. Nothing even compares!! (sorry hubby)

The more I grow, the more I realise that my mom is the best friend I have ever had!

So here’s to my super woman, my rock and the best mom in the world!

Thank you for never leaving my side. I love you!

My mum has always been an inspiration to me and woman alike. She married at a very young age, but she still strived hard to send her 3 daughters to college while she herself was studying towards her BEd degree. She made a lot of sacrifices for us so we could have better lives and be better woman today.

My mum is the family’s rock; a strong foundation for our family…
She is the one who taught us to pray, to read and to do the rest of life…

thankfulness instead of grumbling, confidence rather than doubts, peace rather than conflicts, trust rather than suspicion, certainty instead of apprehension, rest instead of restlessness, security instead of fear,
freedom rather than bondage , i really love her

My mom Loreen is basically Wonder Woman. She’s a phenomenal wife to my dad, stepmom to my half-brother and mom to my sister and me, sacrificing time and time again so that we are supported and can prosper. She moved here from the USA over 25 years ago and chose to live far away from the home and family that she loves to grow and provide for our family. She has taught me the value of hard work through her constant efforts as an amazing principal to an entire primary school and boss to a large staff of teachers; she has taught me to do what you love, being a teacher to 16 Grade 3 learners and investing in the lives of each of them. Most of all, my mom taught my sister and me to love knowledge, because since we were born she read to us constantly. One of our favourite things to do as a family is visit Exclusives! My incredible mom runs on little sleep and leftovers most of the time and rarely takes time for herself, so this giveaway would be absolutely perfect for her and just what she deserves.

It’s difficult to pinpoint one thing my mother’s done for me, because she’s done so much. When I was a toddler, I almost choked to death, it was my mother who saved my life. When I was older, and very sick with pneumonia, it was my mother who took me back and forth from the hospital to have my portable drip changed. When I was a teenager, and one of my teachers victomised me, my mother protected me. And when I was an adult, and I wanted to attend university,my mother took money out of her life savings for it to happen. I owe my mother everything. I cannot remember everything’s she done for me, because she’s done things without me realising, sacrificed things without saying a word, because she’s the best mother anyone could ever hope for.

My mum has been through her fair share of tough times but she never lets it get her down. She will always be waiting with open arms to comfort me so that I never have to experience any of the pain she had endured. She is my rock, my best friend, my hero. There is nothing she isn’t willing to do for us. She has taught me to be kind, patient and hard working along with so many other qualities that I will always be thankful for.

My mother worked over 15 hour each and every day while I was in school. She worked herself to the bone and always had a smile on her face. She has not gotten herself anything new, as she wants to take care of me and my sister. My sister has hurt my mother with her ungratefulness. I really want to spoil my mom to try and thank her for all of her sacrifices.

When I came home at 25 to tell my mom I was quitting my job and wanted to move 1000km away to study and I needed her to support/pay for me again, her response was only pure joy at me having a goal. Five years later she is still funding my dream. I can fall, make mistakes, soar and succeed all because she has always got me covered. My mom is my life insurance policy that pays me back everyday even when I am constantly claiming. It was tough at some points when she had to work three jobs and seeing her sacrifice is painful but one day, even little bits at a time I will pay it all back in kind.

My mom has been there for me when noone else has. Growing up without a dad was tough but my mom did a great job! She is so supportive, helping me achieve my dream of becoming a teacher, joining me in my animal rights rallies and spending time with me, listening to me and giving me the best advice. For this I will be forever grateful.

A mother is a special person whether you are a child or a grown up you will always be their “baby” and they will do what is necessary to help you, protect you and provide for you. My mother is special, like all mothers and we enjoy spending time together, exploring the world ( although now she is in her eighties, travel is done through reading 🙂 ) and remembering happy family times and getting through the bad and the sad times. We always try to treat her with a surprise on Mother’s Day, her birthday or whenever we can. This would make a lovely spoil for a lovely lady, my mother.

My mom is without a doubt the best person I have ever known. From day one she has fought for me, battling a life-threatening pregnancy to bring me into this world and having her heart stop momentarily in labour. Every single day of my life my mother has made sure I know how loved and cherished I am and she has always been my safe haven, my best friend, my guardian angel in disguise. She has taught me too many life lessons to count, and is the kindest most loving person imaginable. From a young age she supported my love of books and imagination, and was there with proud tears in her eyes when I graduated from university this year. My soft hearted mommy also proved herself a woman of steel when she conquered cancer while still being the rock of our family. She is always too busy loving us to take time for herself and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of a pampering than my hero.

Exactly one year ago we found out my dad was terminally ill, but my mother never let that break her. She looked after me, my brother and my sick father for all the months he was in hospital.

She still picked me up from university, made my lunches and asked about my day. When things got harder, so did she. When my dad passed away she didn’t crumble but stayed strong for us. Even now, she protects me in every way she can and makes sure I have whatever I need. We are never without.

The only thing we need is a small break from the constant longing. But she won’t let me see that – she’s being as strong as she can be.

When I was 17 years old, in Matric my father passed away suddenly. Overnight my mum became a single parent and went sole income provider. She took on a full time job as a cashier at a supper market to provide for us. She sacrificed a lot for my two brothers and I especially in the years that followed when I was attending college. Without her emotional support and also financial support I would not have been able to attend a tertiary institute and ultimately receive a qualification which has opened many doors for me today. She is the most selfless person I know. Constantly going out of her way to make someone’s day. I would not be the individual I am if not for my mum. Her kindness, warm and generosity of spirit has taught me how to be a better person.

My mom is a super woman, i noticed her strength when my dad was diagnosed with diabetes and was in critical condition for about two weeks, my mom managed to hold the family together. she was stressed but she kept going, she always sacrifices her happiness for others. she went through a lot in 2015 but she still glows like a star, she has done a lot for me and my siblings and deserves to be spoilt a bit. my mom is also full of love , tender care , warmth and humanity.

My Mom is a woman of grace. A single parent who raised two boys , worked and baked to support us.. On her weekends she use to do fabric painting and make the most awesome pinates ever and sell them to make extra cash for us. A woman who has had a tough life but made it through with the most beautiful smile on her face. A woman who proved she can be independent and let no man define who she is or her worth. The best advise my mum gave me which I will never ever forget was “ Son , always take care of a woman’s heart no matter what , women are strong but they are also very delicate and soft. I don’t ever want you to be the reason for hardening a women’s heart’ , My mom inspires me in so many ways. She taught me that success is not all the fancy cars or big houses , it’s not the amount of money you have in your bank account BUT its merely the impact you make on someone life , it is how you feel when u go to bed at night knowing you have done your utmost best to be a good person . Today I am a married man , I always hold my Mum and my wifes heart with love and compassion. It is because of my mum , that I am the man I am today and I treasure her with everything I have. She is stronger that SUPERMAN TOUGHER THAN HULK , SHE is my Superwoman because they do exist right here on earth.
A strong woman who isn’t afraid to get down and dirty…YES , she gets under those cars with me and we do MANLY stuff together hehehe, BUT she also likes to be pampered once in a while  my mum is a tough cookie , but also a woman who is simply GRACE AND ELEGANCE , wrapped up in wholesome love , a woman who is a cloud of softness that cushions my soul.. I honour my mom a true inspiration.

When I was about 11 we lost our father. He and my mother had been divorced for a while, but we were still close. She raised the three of us (my two brothers and I) with love and care.

Very often times were tough and we knew she was struggling on her own, financially, and perhaps even a little in loneliness, but we never doubted the love she had for us.

We have all grown up into successful, happy and confident individuals because of her sacrifices. I try to tell her as often as I can that I love her and that even though the childhood I had was difficult, it has taught me so much about respect, compassion and strength.

    Mothers are strength personified.

    xx Love you mom

I would love to win this for my wife. She is the most amazing Mother on this Universe. You know every man wants a woman that is as good as his mother, every man is wrong. they should want a wife like my wife. My wife is taken so they will have to find their own.My wife is an exceptional mother to our two beautiful daughters. She sacrifices everything for our kids. I was unemployed for some point & faced some hospital time for depression. My wife held our family together. Driving the kids to school, going to work, visiting me at hospital. Cooking for me. She would come to hospital with breakfast, lunch and dinner for me. Inbetween working she was cooking for me, running around with the kids and she lost herself in all of this. I realised how this affected her well being and pulled myself together. She did not once complain or blame me. She was my support and my strength. My girls have inherited these good values from their mum. Her spunk for life, her integrity, her professionalism, she is the life of the party and the pillar in our lives. I am hoping to win this for my wife because she is an amazing mum, I sometimes just sit back & admire her with the kids. It’s like I am in heaven!

I have no sad or grand stories to tell about my mother. She has never had to nurse me back to health (beyond the usual small illnesses), help me financially or fight any of my battles. My stories of my mother are not grand but she is, in all the smallest and most important ways, the best mom ever. The things I love and appreciate the most are the days I come home from work to find that she has come into my house and washed the dishes. Or when she makes special trips to the shops to buy the brownies I’m craving when it’s my time of the month or I’m feeling sick. I love her even more when she makes an extra trip to buy the pringles that she forgot on the first trip.

I think though that the thing I love the most is that she has allowed me to develop into my own person. No religion or opinion was ever forced on me. She has never made me feel that my value as a person is intrinsically connected to my ability to secure a husband. My career was my own to decide. I was never forced to go to university. I have chosen every single aspect of my life which is a very rare gift that few mothers allow their children. And that is why my mom is the best.

My mom will do anything and everything to help where she can especially when it comes to her children. When I needed a place to stay without distractions she didn’t hesitate to welcome me back home. And when she came home to discover a fur baby in my arms she accepted her as part of the family even though she is not a pet person at all. This and much more makes my mom the best.

My mom was in an abusive marriage. She gathered some courage, rounded us up and we all escaped where we lived in the Saartjie Baartman centre for abused women and children. She was strong enough to leave. Having an incomplete schooling and no skills she worked in a tuckshop and cleaned in a family members home for food and accommodation. She worked part time in an event and decor company for our food and schooling. I was even able to study further. And now she lives with me to help with my kids while hubby and I work. I’ll never be able to repay her

My mom has done the very best for me that she could with what she had available to her without ever complaining…just amazing!

My amazing-beyond-words mother is 64 years old and although she is multi-disabled (she can only walk with the help of a walker) she still teaches full time!!!

She is the strongest person I have ever met. She raised me and my brother in extremely difficult circumstances. Having to look after a very ill husband, as well as her sick mother, and working full time, she still had enough energy left to give me and my brother quality time. We never lacked anything.

I am now 34 years old and suffer from schizophrenia. My mother has been by my side every step of the way. She supports me in so many ways and eventhough she is disabled, she looks after me when I get ill. How blessed can a child get!!!

Because of my illness I can’t work, and she looks after me in every way imaginable. Please bless her with this gift. There is no-one more worthy.

Her name is Lilly Vorster. I hope I can one day repay her for what she has done for me. Please help me to show her some gratitude.

My mother has started this year off on a tough note, with my father suffering a heart attacked and undergoing a quadruple bypass. He was in hospital for a month in high care, then intensive care and had to undergo another month in rehabilitation to strengthen his muscles and learn to talk/enunciate properly again.

Watching my mom be the pillar of strength through this very tough time in her, and our family’s lives was truly a blessing. It showed me how a mother is the one who holds the family together during these difficult times, even when she was not sure whether my dad would make it up to this day she prayed with his daily, visited him 3 times a day and even went to the effort of putting face cream on his skin and moisturizing his body, taking his clothes home to wash daily and sneaking him in some snacks into Hospital.

My mother has always put her family’s needs first and above her own, and so for mothers day I am going to put her needs above mine !

My mum is amazing on so many levels. We never grew up rich or spoiled for choice but as far as I can remember, we always had everything we needed. My mum sacrificed daily so we could have opportunities to reach further in life. It is because of her that I am the strong, independent, bold woman that I am today. I can proudly say that I have achieved because my mum made it so.

I don’t know if God has given me enough time in a lifetime, enough appreciation, enough ability to understand and treasure my mum.
My mother is the sort of non traditional mother whom I’ll always look up to. She is fiercely independent, forward thinking and unfailingly just. She has always instilled in me the importance of telling the truth as it is and not hiding or embellishing it – not for social norms, not for husbands or families, not for the easy option out. She has taught me to stand up for myself and not let anyone dictate my life or choices for me. She has always given me courage and has never hesitated to chide me when she felt I needed it. She is the strongest woman I know, with the kindest heart. My mum is the best because she taught me how to be strong, how to be caring, how to be a dreamer, how to be a maker…she spoiled me (up until now) to the bone, & she disciplined me to the core, she showed me there are more shades of life then merely black and white, she shared how painful it is to grow old, yet to think like a child… she made mistakes so i could learn, she sowed the seed of love in me that makes me grow each day! Hers is the face sweetest to me and I am the lucky woman who calls her Mummy!

She dosnt like mothers day much after her mom passed away 3 years ago and my sister stopped talking to us. I try my best to make her day as happy as possible. She spends it with my sisters kids and my aunt who are also all alone.

My mom would give up everything for us if it meant giving us a great day. I wish I could give her one great mothers day this year!

She puts all her time and all her energy into her family, and making sure we are happy. She deserves to spoiled more than anything, for a change. She has taught me to stand up for what's right, treat everyone I come across with respect and compassion, and I continue to learn from her, every single day. There is no one like my mom, we are very fortunate to have her in our lives. We don't realise how blessed we truly are, to be able to call her our mom. I couldn't begin to imagine life without her. My Mum , one in a million my best friend and my biggest cheerleader. We have a love/hate relationship but the bond we share can never be broken. My mum has played the dual role of parent since my Dad died in 2012. As the sole caregiver to my sick 83year old gran my mum is home bound for large periods of time. There is nothing my mum would not do for me BUT the biggest thing she has done is love me unconditionally and support my dreams. I wish I could give her the world just to say thank you….so winning a prize like this would be heaven sent.

A comment section would never be enough for me to state what my mum (Ncediwe Joko ) has done for me but i can say she has been a mother, a sister , aunt and a friend to me. she has been always there when i needed her . The were times in my my life when I did not believe in my self ,she always get me the best advise and comforted me in times of sadness. Growing without my father being with us she tried to do all the jobs of both parents. I am what I am today because of all the teaching and guidance I got from her.she is a true role model to me as she inspires me to be what i want to be and not let society succumb me to what they think i should me. she has shown me in life that i must not look at things as mistakes but look at them as learning curves that will help you in future experiences.
she is a loving parent and everything she does she gives it her all ,whether its its work or taking care of her family she does it to the the best of her abilities and that has thought me not t be afraid to stand in the crowd.for me winning this for her would be a great deal as this would mean she gets someone to do something nice for without having to worry about how they will repay the person, and it would give her a great deal of happiness to have something to treasure as her own.

Lindiwe is my best friend, my first love, my everything. As if bringing me into the world wasn’t enough already, she took time out off her own life to ensure that mine was amazing. She has given me the best years of her life and has asked for nothing in return. She gave me the world and there is nothing that I can give back to her as a thank you token. However, I am very thankful that there is a day that was made simply to honour her being my mother, my smile keeper and my everything!

  82. Janine Dames April 27th, 2016 at 11:49 pm #

My parents got divorced when I was 9 years old. It was tough growing up seeing that they couldn’t make it work and when the divorce happened. Since then, my mom, Iris Dames, who raised me as a single mother with only one salary, still managed to financially support me through school, bought me a second-hand car and five years of college. I have always had food on the table and clothes to wear, toiletries and a little spending money sometimes to have special times with friends. With life being so expensive, I honestly don’t know how she did it. She mostly made sure my needs, or even wants, came before hers.
And I must admit I wasn’t the easiest child. I was quite a rebel most of my High School years. We had our rocky moments, but as I grew older, and with both of us learning more out of life, we came to understand each other more and grew a sisterly-bond. I trust her and can tell her literally anything and everything, which I really appreciate knowing not everyone has that kind of open relationship with their parents. We sometimes even quarrel just like sisters over silly things, but deep in our hearts we still know the amount of unconditional love we have for each other, is indescribable.
Emotionally she has also really tried to support me when I had my very bad “dips” or heartbreaks throughout the years. And she has been my number one fan, being present at every Prize Giving, Eisteddfod or Drama show. As absurd and unrealistic as most people think it is to follow a passion to succeed in the Drama industry, she still believed in my passion and tried to help me make my dreams come true by giving me the opportunity to study Performing Arts and Drama Teaching.
In 2013 we unfortunately found out that she is diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast cancer.. It has spreaded throughout the body and is quite severe at the moment with her second week in hospital…yet this remarkably strong woman is still fighting. She has always tried to make the most out of every situation, despite all the struggles she had throughout her life. Her inner strength and fun-loving personality is unbelievable, and I am extremely proud of her.
Yes, I think this mother/sister of mine is a little crazy at times, but so am I, and yes we’ve had our bad moments just like anyone else. But the amount of gratitude I have for her supporting me for so many years financially and emotionally is huge. And the admiration of her inner strength is even greater. – Not only by me, but everyone around her. I can’t wait to finally start giving back and spoiling her to show my appreciation for all that she has done for me over the years. She is indeed a superstar, an inspiration and the definition of a strong, independent mother and woman.

My mom is the sweetest, kindest and most caring person I know. She is my mentor, my therapist, my doctor, my baker, she is the shoulder I cry on and the person I laugh the hardest with, This woman would give her last to a complete stranger if they needed help. Even though my mom is a pensioner, she makes sandwiches every wednesday for a local school in our area so that all the children get at least something to eat. She is one in a million, and I am honoured to call her my mom. When I got married the budget was pretty tight, and wedding dresses are so expensive.. so my mom made me the most beautiful wedding dress.. and no, she is not a dressmaker, and totally self taught. And even at age 40, my mom’s hugs can still make my biggest problems seem manageable. I cannot imagine my life without her xx

My mom is my best friend. I’ve always been a bit of an outsider….the shy nerdy type who hasn’t quite found her place in the world. My mom has always made me feel like that is a special trait and something to be proud of and encouraged. She helped me grow into a strong woman who looks after herself and she’s always there as my supporter, cheerleader and friend. She really is my inspiration and I’m truly blessed to have her

My Mom helped my sister plan my entire kitchen tea recently, as my sister was my one and only bridesmaid. But my mom didn’t stop there – she also planned my bachelorette party and even joined the girls on a night out on the town. She had a fabulous time being out and about with us and she made my special night all the more special and fun by being there – complete with her mini-mouse ears.

My Mom is my ROCK!! She is an amazingly strong woman both mentally and emotionally and I am in awe of her strength of courage, resilience and perseverance. Having lost the love of her life, who was her soul mate and my father, to cancer when I was a toddler was a really devastating blow to her. She had to put aside her grief and concentrate on having to deal with the reality of being a single parent. She has made such tremendous sacrifices over the years and has always made me her No.1 priority. I am so grateful for all her sacrifices which has now enabled me to attend Varsity to follow my dreams and passion as I study towards achieving my degree in Civil Engineering, I would not be able to do this without her by my side every step of the way. She is the most amazing woman, friend, sister, aunt, but more importantly MY MOM. Her unconditional love, unwavering support, absolute belief and trust in me has shaped me into the woman I am today, and I am so blessed and honored to have her in my life. She always puts others first without a thought for herself, she is a generous, sympathetic and kind-hearted woman. I sincerely hope to one day become such a role model to my own children. It would be so wonderful to win this amazing prize for her to show my appreciation for everything she so selflessly gives of herself not only to me, but to others as well.

I can’t begin to tell you how lucky I am to have this mom. Every time I think about her back story and the things she had had to deal with it is not only a miracle to have her here but to have her as the kindest person I’ve ever known.

My mom was born into a family of 10. A very poor mining family. Mother lost in her own sadness. Father a drunk. Anything and everything that could have happened to her, did and she has the physical and emotional scars to prove it. You would think that when her father died when she was 9 things would get better but instead her mother remarried quickly and her step father sent her away as she was, “in the way of their perfect love”.

She was alone because most of her brothers and sisters were much older and had left. She had been sent to South Africa to a boarding school and her only sister (close in age) was sent to Namibia. Sad but true.

Fast forward a few years when she had saved up enough money to go to art school but was in a terrible car accident that no one believed anyone could have survived. She did. Luckily she had the money for her year long treatment with a broken neck.

She landed up with terrible emotional scars and anorexia. At her worst she weighed 38 kilos and even the psychologists at Tara asked her mother to come and talk – her response was that she would rather my mother die than discuss the past. Luckily my mom’s best friend (my dad) stood by her side through thick and thin… And together they forged a strong bond, successfully opening their own companies and working hard at creating a beautiful family environment for my brother and I. Through the years both parents have taken in various kids and young adults, helping them through tough situations – so that my mom could right the wrongs her parents committed. We have grown up being taught to care and give and be empathetic to others and to always help where we can.

About 5-6 years ago my mom got very sick with Barrats Esophagus (a pre cancer) and underwent various operations that left her weak and mostly in hospital over one year in particular. All of us were devastated but by her side… And by all of us I mean her husband, children and people she had helped over all the years. Just as she was starting to get better she was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes and colon. She went in for tests and while they were doing the special scan they had not tested her for an allergy using the dye and she died. They had to pull her back to life and within 24 hours of that they had operated to remove the cancer. It was devastating for her. And yet, despite all of this, and the weeky chemo treatments that have left her with constant pins and needles in her fingers and toes, and sudden temporary blindness in her eyes at times, she still thinks about others’ wellbeings over her own. She is the most selfless and kind individual that this world has ever had… And no matter the injustices that have tried to take her down, she continues to smile, look forward and count her blessings all while continuing to help others. If I could be half the woman my mom is, I would be the luckiest person alive. I love you mom xxx

It a bit of a long story but my moment was when my now 7 year old was only a year old. She had gotten sick and was in so much pain. I called my mum in tears asking her how she did it. How did she manage and go though all of this with us. In that moment I wished all my Little ones pain could be transferred to me. I wished in life I could stop anything or anyone from hurting her.

I knew it wasn’t possible but wanted it so. My mum responded with wise words saying that it is only a mother that would love so deeply yet be so firm at times. She said she only wanted the best for us. Every pain and heartbeat she felt with us. Every achievement celebrated was hers to.

You once you become I mum you not only live your life but live your children’s life through them.

So it was at that moment I realised how blessed I was to have my mum and how blessed I was to be a mum..

There are times when I pray for her death, not because I wish her ill or I want her gone, but because I think she would be happier in the next life. For someone that gives so much of the little that she has, she never gets anything in return. Not a single thank you from all the mouths she has fed, no recognition for her hard work at her workplace and then there’s the universe, it keeps taking the little life she has left. Watching her go through losing two of her children has been the worst experience and ever since then, she hasn’t been the same. She smiles but it’s never for more than a minute. Yet with all of that, she still breaks parts of her to complete me. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for me and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. She is simply amazing

My mom is the best mom in South Africa because she is the person who celebrates my success, laughs at my lame jokes, cries with me when I’m down and helps me stand up again. My mom taught me to believe in myself, to live for every single moment, to be kind and to pray when in doubt. My mom is the best mom in South Africa because without her, I wouldn’t be me, without her I wouldn’t have a reason to smile and without her I wouldn’t feel unconditional love.

The fact that my mom is still standing tall staggers me. She’s been through hell on earth ever since the divorce 18 odd years ago. My sister and I never wanted for anything. She practically sacrificed her life, and still does, to make sure that we get the best oppurtunities in life. She’s a workaholic and diabetic, yet she managed to raise two level headed young adults despite this and the fact that she is a single mother. I love her to the depths of my heart and back, and would love to spoil her with this,as small as the chances of winning are.

My mom is my best friend, my rock, my everything. I would take a bullet for her. She is always there for me, a shoulder to cry on, a person to laugh with and share my most intimate thoughts. I could not have asked for a better mom. A truly inspiring lady whom I adore as well as the best granny to my two beautiful girls. I don’t know where she finds the energy to be the person she is. She can cook like a dream and I always get me bags, i love her to the moon and back. She is the most selfless person and is soo generous without ever asking for anything in return. The beggars by her house always wave at her when she drives past as she gives them bread etc nearly every day. I really don’t know where I would be today if i didn’t have my beautiful mom. I LOVE HER and the best part is she loves me unconditionally.
MOTHER (moth.er) muther ~ a verb : to love, nourish, protect, teach, comfort, guide, nurture, support, embrace, cherish, reassure. All the things my gorgeous MOM does.

My Mother is an absolute powerhouse! My parents divorced when I was only 4 years old, so my Mother raised me and my 3 older siblings singlehandedly for the last 18 years. We’ve been through the worst of times and the best of times, but no matter what was happening in our lives, my Mother made sure that we never once went to bed hungry (even if that meant she had to). My Mother battled with depression and alcoholism for about 25 years, but managed to raise her 4 children into wholesome legends all on her own AND overcome her illnesses. She was my very first friend and she still remains my best. She has incredible strength and a heart of gold, with the most radiant and spectacular soul, and I truly aspire to be just like her. She deserves the world, and I will never stop expressing my deep, unconditional Love and gratitude towards her for the rest of my life, which will only really put a dent in all that my beautiful Mother truly deserves ❤

I am not going to share a tragic story of my childhood, where my mom was the heroine of the story. I have them to share, but I’m not going to. Not because they’re too painful to revisit, but because I don’t think that it’s necessary.

I’m not at all saying that tragic stories of single mothers having to bring up their kids alone, or abusive husbands terrorising years of selfless mothers’ lives, or even stories of the children making decisions in this ever-challenging life that make it hard for their mothers to bring them up should not be of deep sincere concern, nor am I trying to push aside such situations into lesser light. What I’m trying to do, or say, is explain that “the best mom in SA” does not need to have a story behind what she has overcome to be the best mom. In fact, “the best mom in SA” cannot, in theory, exist at all.

To most, their own mother is their greatest inspiration; quite naturally as she is your first true unconditional love and what beats unconditional love? To most, their own mother is, in their eyes, “the best mom in SA”, so how can one compete with the next?

Instead, I choose to rather take this opposite approach to this competition and hope to stand out with such an opinion. I read and agree with every single comment given in this feed: each of their mothers is the best mom in SA, to them.

Alike, my own mother is my greatest inspiration, my best friend. I will forever be grateful for having my mother to guide me throughout my twenty-one years. Her genuine and unselfish nature has taught me so much, not only about life but about myself, and has molded me into the young woman I am today. Now, I stand, equipped and ready to create a life of my own and hopefully follow in her motherly footsteps with a family of my own one day. My mother, the best mom in South Africa, to me.

My mom has done everything and more for me.
She has been not only the absolute best mom anyone could ask for but also the best dad anyone could ask for, filling both roles! She raised me as a single mom and always provided for me, always found a way to make me feel special and to show she cared. My wonderful, warm-hearted, selfless, caring mother has always supported my dreams and goals and has never doubted that I can achieve anything I put my mind to.
One of the things I love most about my mom is her perseverance, she works so hard and never gives up! And after a long day at work she loves nothing more than to curl up with a good book. She passed her deep love of reading onto me and planted the seed that gave me my love of collecting all of my favourite books. Her bookshelf is already brimming while mine is small in comparison but it’s so exciting having the same love of books and sharing the hobby. When life gets busy and things get a little stressed, there is no better way to relax than with a good book, chat about what we thought about the ending when we’re done and of course, we both know that there is nothing better than the smell of the pages in a book!

This prize would be the perfect way to show my mom how much she means to me, by spoiling her with her absolute love, books! I’d give you a whole library if I could ma, you’re the best and I love you to the moon and back <3 <3 <3

I’d hoped for one last look-back, to turn around and see her one last time, silhouetted by the rising sun, a hand raised in farewell. I’d hoped for one last glimpse of my mom’s smiling face, one finger bravely brushing away the swell of emotion in her tears. But she was gone, swallowed by the madding, jostling, confused crowd, like a small fish swimming against the current.

When I said goodbye to my mom, that was when I knew how much I needed her to stay. When I let her go, that’s when I wanted the most to hold on. When she could no longer do anything for me, that’s when I realised everything she had done.

I wasn’t supposed to happen. I was an accident; ill-timed and parasitic I grew in her body like a cancer, but instead of releasing me that beautiful teenage girl said “no, she can stay.” That was when the daily sacrifice for my well-being over her own began.

She kept me, even when all the world was telling her not to. She kept me, even when I kicked and sent bruises blooming across her skin. Even when she was choking on her own morning-sickness-vomit that stayed more than just mornings. Even when I grew too large and she knew that a knife would have to separate her flesh to allow my emergence, permanently branding her body with a puckered pink scar. She kept me.

She fed me at strange hours that left bags under her eyes. She woke to heed my every cry, so often the bags under her eyes could have burst forth the darkness of necromancer’s shadows. Physically drained, she allowed me to drain her even further, only to throw it all back up on her last clean t-shirt.

At first my dad was there to help, but when he and my mom separated less than three years after I was born, I gradually saw him less and less, and my mom became my parents both rolled into one.

When it came time to send me to school, she had no help. No family money, no husband with a steady job, no kindly uncle to help out. So she sold her soul to the institution in return for one child’s school fees to be paid. They only gave her half, however, and she’s never told me where the rest of the money came from. What else she needed to do to secure my education. And at 5 years old, I was not likely to ask.

Instead I was ungrateful: “Why do I have to go to school? I hate it. I hate you!” I would scream. I can only imagine now how hard it must have been for my mom to keep going, keep sacrificing, in the face of the screaming nothing that I gave back to her.

When she finally married, seven years after my dad left us, I felt cheated. Abandoned. It had always been the two of us, and now I was surplus. My mom explained “Frank does nice things for us. He will pay your school fees and put food on the table.” I wonder now if she loved him AND he would do these things for us, or if she only married him BECAUSE he would look after us. If the latter, I can’t begin to describe the sacrifice that would have been: to her morals, her body, her entire nature denied.

Even though my mom has had to work so hard to be there for me financially, she’s always found time to be there for me emotionally. Even when I thought her advice was wrong, and hated her for it, I’ve always come crawling back when I found out she was right. Again. And again. And AGAIN. And every time I do she opens her arms to me and enfolds me in them, until the whole world shrinks to just that point. Nothing else exists when I’m in her arms. I’m just a small child, who’s been knocked down by the world and needs mommy to kiss everything better. And she does: she kisses me and makes everything better.

It wasn’t until I said goodbye to my mom, that I knew how much I needed her to stay. It was only when I let her go, that I wanted the most to hold on. When she could no longer do anything for me, that’s when I realised everything she had done.

My 83 year old mum not only brought me up single-handedly after my dad died when I was one year old; she also had the huge heart to adopt my two sisters, at a time when adoption across the colour line was almost unheard of in this country. She is the wisest, most generous, most GIVING person I know, who radiates a special light felt even by total strangers. Kids come up to her just to stroke her hand or give her a hug. She also gave me enormous freedom to be myself, to travel the world, to experience different cultures and places. Whenever she’s visited me, people would ask after her once she had left. My mum is a humble, loving, true-spirit who has never had much materially, but who has unstintingly shared her gift for spreading joy and love wherever she goes. She deserves to be pampered.

Everything my mum has done for me cannot be put down in words, yet I will attempt to. She is not the best mum in the world. She is the best *parent* in the world. It’s amazing how she can change in an instant. One minute she’s a doctor, the next a chef, and in the next moment she’s a comedian. My mum alone raised my sister and I and we never felt the hole of an absent father. She filled that role all too well. She’s a carpenter, the resident handyman with a style sense to rival that of Gert Johan Coetser.

Always putting her children first and saying “That’s what mother’s do” stopped being true a long time ago. She goes beyond the call of duty and being a mother is the first priority in her life. She would lay down her life for my sister and I, not because “that’s what mother’s do” but because that’s the type of person she is.

She’s not perfect but then again, who is? I’d be lucky if I grow up to be half the woman she is. Strong, independent and beautifully radiant. My shining star. The reason why I smile every morning because she wakes me up with a big smile herself, knowing that I hate to wake up so early and hoping that if she has a happy face then it will be contagious to me too.

She’s right more times than I care to admit! And its her uniqueness that makes her special. I’d love to win this prize not for me, but because she encompasses the best qualities every mother possess and she deserves it. She’s had more than her fair share of hardships and she still kept moving forward, tackling the world, paving her own way. My amazing mum.

It’s amazing how as kids, you never quite understand why your mother does what she does.
It’s only as you get older you begin to understand.
And when you have your own kids, well now you understand.
My mom has been my rock lately.
Currently I am suffering from a severe case of ocd/phobia and she is the one who is carrying me through and helping me to get over it.

She endured the loss of my younger sister and my sister got married overseas and still my mom remains full of life. But also to always have respect for anyone that came in to your path, to take care as much as you can of others, to believe in others and to always treat others with kindness and care, to take care of our planet and all creatures on it, and to love always!

My mum put her dream of becoming a teacher on hold for a long time, so that she could invest in her children’s education instead. She worked two jobs to ensure that we could have the best education possible. She never complained about the sacrifice she had to make and even though she would come home exhausted each day, she still strived to be the there for us in every way possible. She always a put our needs and wants before her own and never failed to come through for us. She has been our coach, teacher, therapist, chauffeur, cook, agony aunt and above all, our best friend.

My mum isn’t just a mother to my siblings and I; she is a mother to many others and loves to take the vulnerable under her wing. In this way, she has taught us valuable lessons about compassion, love and being an asset to the community. To our consternation, she always forgives those who hurt her over and over again.

My mum has now finally realised her dream of becoming a teacher, and the parents of her students have nothing but praise and admiration for her. The greatest compliment that anyone can give me is to tell me I am like my mother. If I become half the woman she is, I will be content.

My Grand-Mom is the best mom to me and in my opinion the best mom in SA…she taught me about books, she would read to me almost every night and tell me sweet stories of horses and fairies when I woke up having a nightmare, she put me through school and made sure I got a fantastic education, she helped me through Varsity, and always pushed me to do my best, she put up with me as a bratty teenager, when she didn’t have to! She was, and is, always there for me! No matter what, I can always count on my Grandmom…she made me the person I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful!

Ever since I was little, my mom would take my sister and I to the library. This instilled the love of reading in us, and I still get a rush whenever I walk into a library or a bookshop! My mom would take my sister and I to art classes every Saturday, for about 6 years. As such, my two greatest loves are literature and art. It means so much as a child when your mom does things with you and encourages you in the activities that you enjoy.
Even though at the time I thought that my mom was putting us under pressure to do well in school, I realise that I would not be where I am today, studying Medicine, had it not been for her instilling a drive in me to do the best that I could, and not settle for complacency.
My mom has always dedicated most of her waking hours to her family, and I think that I will never be able to repay her for what she does for us. Winning this prize will make her year!
