Press Release

Freshlyground celebrates 10th birthday with old school nationwide tour

Johannesburg, 4 October, 2011 – From 28 October to 9 December 2011 the country’s premium afro-pop outfit, Freshlyground, will be making things happen with Nedbank when they hit the road for an old school nationwide tour.

Dubbed The Freshlyground 10 Year Birthday Love No Hate Tour, the 29-date showcase will see the band taking their award winning afro-pop sound from large cities to small towns, in celebration of their 10 year anniversary and very own Love No Hate campaign.

The partnership with Nedbank will see Freshlyground perform in remote parts of South Africa that are often deprived of entertainment of this stature.

A throwback to old school Rock n’ Roll touring, the seven piece group will packup their lives, instruments, sound equipment and roadies, and hit the road in a variety of tour busses and vehicles.

The tour will visit cities, towns and townships stretching from the coast all the way to Sun City. The ambitious and hectic tour schedule will once again raise the level of national tours by local bands.

The band has specifically chosen smaller theatre environments in order to create a sense of intimacy, so early booking is essential. Audiences can expect evenings of intimate story-telling and dramatic musical performance.

Furthermore, Freshlyground and Nedbank have teamed up to ‘give back’ to communities and will be staging six free concerts in township venues across South Africa.

“This is just another way Nedbank continues to make things happen, allowing thousands of music lovers and Nedbank clients across South Africa to join in the 10 year celebration of this award winning group. This is in keeping with our commitment to the development of arts and culture in South Africa through the Nedbank Arts & Culture Trust since 1994,”says Ciko Thomas: Nedbank Managing Executive of Consumer Banking

“Freshlyground is certainly the epitomy of how each of us can make things happen through hard work and commitment. The Freshlyground 10 Year Birthday Love No Hate Tour will see us reconnecting with several communities throughout South Africa,”adds Thomas.

Since the band’s first studio album JikaJika, which was released in 2003, Freshlyground has grown to become part of the fabric of the new South Africa with their music taking on the optimistic and lighthearted strains of Desmond Tutu’s rainbow nation while continuing to touch on topical and sometimes politically sensitive issues. It’s precisely this optimism and relevance which has led to their universal appeal across economic, racial and political divides in South Africa. It has also led to success and acclaim among their peers.

Freshlyground has won and MTV Europe award andeight South African Music Awards including; Album of the Year, Ma Cheri, May 2008, Best Duo/Group also for Ma Cheri, May 2008 and Best Adult Contemporary English Album for Radio Africa, May 2011. In 2010 they were selected to perform the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa alongside multi-platinum selling artist Shakira – in the process gaining much deserved international acclaim.

Freshlyground are pleased to confirm that the acclaimed group The Soil will be the opening act for their Johannesburg Shows. The Soil are a 4-member acapella singing group whose music can best be described as ‘Kasi Soul’. The Soil strives to fuse their voices to deliver melodic and harmonious messages that are aimed at uplifting and healing souls all around the world. See http://www.facebook.com/thesoilkasisoul?sk=info
