The Winners of the Spike TV Annual Video Game Awards for 2011

Games are quickly becoming as elaborate and long-running as movie trilogies and novel series. The level of graphic detail demanded of games is now on par with Michael Bay movies, and there’s a definite goldmine lying in every military-style shooter. (Though the obsession escapes me: Battlefield 3 is interchangable with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I would rather be playing Fallout: New Vegas or Starcraft.) While I would personally have story over stunning gameplay any day, sometimes the two come together to form a magnificent whole. Thankfully, these gaming masterpieces do not go unrecognised.

The Spike TV annual Video Game Awards has become the best snapshot of the gaming industry; not only of its studios, but of what gamers want and love. A prestigious event that also serves as a platform to reveal upcoming games, it is one of the biggest events on the growing gaming calender.

Industry giants gathered as the network celebrated the outstanding artistic and technical achievements in the world of gaming over the past year during the two-hour global event which premiered LIVE on Spike TV, MTV 2 and Spike.com Saturday, December 10 at 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT from Sony Studios in Los Angeles. Internationally, the VGAs were seen in over 100 countries and territories around the world.

A host of the most influential members of the gaming industry, as well as stars from the worlds of sports, television, music and movies gathered at the biggest night in video games.

Now that games have become part of everyday life and no longer the domain of a few, the variety of games has become staggering. Gamers will always come in varying shades of casual and hardcore, but there are enough of us to turn this industry into a multi-billion dollar behemoth. With indie games like Angry Birds taking on games like Gears of War 3 in playing hours and income, the gaming industry is a fascinating place to keep an eye on.
