Towel Day, The Glorious 25th May and Geek Pride Day: Prepare for an overload of Geeks!

Today is definitely the best day to be a geek or a nerd! The term geek has shifted over the years from a derogatory term to a badge of pride. I myself am not ashamed to say that I am a Geek and Proud! Here is a quick breakdown of the three events taking place today for geeks and nerds around the globe:

Towel Day

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.”

Towel day is a celebration of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. If you see anyone walking around with a towel over their shoulder today, you may want to offer him/her this salutation: “You my friend, are one Hoopy Frood!” I’m sure they will appreciate the sentiment greatly. If you have never read the Hitchhikers Guide (in which case, shame on you) then you may be wondering what a towel has to do with anything? Well if you’re going to survive out there, you’ve really got to know where your towel is! You also need to buy yourself a copy of The Hitchhikers Guide 😉 And whatever you do, Don’t Panic!

Geek Pride Day

“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for…”

Geek Pride Day is, as the name states, a celebration of all things Geek. No matter what kind of geek you are, today is the day to to be proud and enjoy doing the things that define you as a geek. You may be planning a life threatening Diablo 3 marathon, you may decide to curl up with your favourite book, or you may even hold a Battlestar Galactica premier in your lounge. No matter how you do it, make sure you make the best of Geek Pride Day! Geek Pride day has been celebrated since 2006 on the anniversary of the premiere of Star Wars in theaters in 1977, so if you happen to have any of the Star Wars movies lying around you may want to watch those too.

The Glorious 25th May

“Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard-Boiled Egg!”

The Glorious 25th May is a celebration of all things Discworld as well as a day to raise awareness for alzheimer’s. I honestly felt my inner nerd cry like a baby when I heard that Sir Terry Pratchett was suffering from early onset alzheimer’s, so this year The Glorious 25th is a great time to not only celebrate the life and works of one of the best fantasy authors alive (honestly, the man was knighted for his books) but also to educate yourself about alzheimer’s. Fans can be seen wearing lilac and toting hard boiled eggs in honour of Sir Terry, so they shouldn’t be too hard to spot. The Discworld is currently up to 39 novels and has at least 2 more novels planned.

The latest Discworld novel to be released is Snuff, which is the perfect book to read on the Glorious 25th as the day got it’s origins in The Night Watch (both books are part of the City Watch arc within the Discworld series).

To be honest I think most of us have a little geek inside us. Some of us let our inner geek run rampant, while others keep it hidden like some secret shame. Perhaps today is the day to let go of all the things that are holding you back, cut loose, kick your feet up and enjoy being a geek. Happy Geek Pride Day everyone!
